HOG THE BRIDGE RUN

I learned to ride a bike when I was 16 a long time ago in 1968.  My first, and only machine was a BSA Bantam.  It was a 175cc I’ll have you know.

The power was not what you could call mind blowing but I still managed to scare myself several times.

So when I was given the chance of a pillion ride on a HOG I jumped at the chance.

Al, my driver, stayed with us last year for the 2003 event. He came down from Burton on Trent for the weekend. I was chuffed as nuts when after inviting him to stay again this year, he said he would bring a spare helmet for me and I could have a day out with him. Borrowed some leathers and gloves and I was set up for hell of a day out.

We met at junction 25 on the M5 at silly o’clock in the morning after leaving my house and waking most of the neighbours with his most legal pipes. Bloody loud bike when he opened it up.

There were about 40 – 50 bikes at Taunton which I thought was pretty good. The ride to the Old Severn Crossing was great fun. The looks we got from the cars we passed was amusing. Some had that look of “what the Fucks going on”…others waved and cheered us on.

Couldn’t believe the bikes at the Aust Services. Every make model and colour and some beyond description. Even looked like a bike from Mad Max….and all those lovely ladies in leather and stilettos. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

Respect to the two guys riding from Scotland in Kilts..I expect they really were “numb nuts”

The ride across the bridge was fantastic. Stood on the pegs I could see bikes as far as I could see. Over the old bridge and then back across the new one. I’m told we were coming back across the new bridge as the last riders were still crossing the old bridge. About 2000 bikes in all. Great to wave to people lining the road bridges over the motorway…

Back to Ashton Court to finish with a healthy fat free burger to top of the morning.

Great day out. Haven’t bikes changed since 1968. The Harley was just a tad more powerful and just a bit louder.

I’m looking forward to next year now.

regards Al
